Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hangul?

Hangul is the official alphabet of the Korean language. It's famous for being one of the most scientific and logical writing systems in the world, created by King Sejong the Great in the 15th century.

How does Hangul work?

Hangul characters are 'featural', meaning their shapes are designed to mimic the shape of the mouth and tongue when making the sound. Consonants and vowels, called 'jamo', are combined into syllabic blocks. For example, 'ㅎ' (h) + 'ㅏ' (a) + 'ㄴ' (n) = '한' (han).

How do I type a syllable block?

Just type the jamo in order! Our 'Phonetic Typing' mode handles this automatically. If you type 'h', then 'a', then 'n', the keyboard will automatically combine them into the single block '한'.

What are the double consonants like 'ㄲ', 'ㄸ', 'ㅃ'?

These are 'tense' consonants. They are pronounced with more force and a higher pitch than their single counterparts. You can type them by holding 'Shift' on our virtual keyboard or by typing the consonant twice in phonetic mode (e.g., 'kk').

What about the complex vowels like 'ㅘ' or 'ㅚ'?

These are diphthongs or vowel combinations. In phonetic mode, you can type them as they sound (e.g., 'wa' for 'ㅘ'). They are made by combining basic vowel jamo.

Is this keyboard good for learning Korean?

It's an excellent tool for understanding how Hangul blocks are constructed. By using the phonetic mode, you can see how romanized sounds are transformed into real Korean syllables.

What is the 'ㅇ' character? Sometimes it's silent, sometimes it's 'ng'.

You're right! When 'ㅇ' is at the beginning of a syllable block (like in '아'), it acts as a silent placeholder. When it's at the bottom (the 'batchim'), it has the 'ng' sound, like in '방' (bang).

Does Korean use spaces?

Yes, unlike Japanese or Chinese, modern Korean is written with spaces between words, just like English.

Are there capital letters in Hangul?

No, Hangul does not have uppercase or lowercase letters.

How can I type my name in Korean?

Use the phonetic mode and sound out your name. The system will create the closest Hangul equivalent. For example, 'Maria' would be typed as 'm-a-r-i-a' to get '마리아'.

Why is the letter 'ㄹ' sometimes 'r' and sometimes 'l'?

The letter 'ㄹ' has two sounds. It's generally an 'r' sound between two vowels and an 'l' sound at the end of a syllable or before a consonant. This is a key pronunciation rule in Korean.

Can I copy and paste the Hangul text?

Yes! Use the 'Copy Text' button to copy your typed text to the clipboard, and you can paste it anywhere.

Do I need to install any special software or fonts?

No, Hangul is a standard part of Unicode and is supported by all modern operating systems and browsers. No installation is necessary.

What is 'batchim'?

'Batchim' (받침) is the term for the final consonant in a syllable block. For example, in the block '한' (han), the 'ㄴ' (n) is the batchim. Not all syllables have one.

Is the keyboard layout standard?

Our virtual keyboard shows the basic jamo. The standard Korean keyboard layout is called '2-Set Dubeolsik', and it's what our phonetic typing mode is based on.
