Frequently Asked Questions
Why are there different forms for the same letter?
Arabic is a cursive script, meaning letters connect to each other. A letter's shape changes depending on its position in a word: initial (start), medial (middle), final (end), or isolated. Our keyboard handles this automatically!
How do I type vowels in Arabic?
Short vowels, known as 'harakat' or diacritics (like fatha ' َ', kasra ' ِ', damma ' ُ'), are not usually written in everyday text but are important for pronunciation and learning. You can add them by pressing 'Shift' to reveal the diacritic keys.
Is this keyboard right-to-left?
Yes! The text you type will correctly appear from right to left, just as it should in Arabic.
What is 'لا' (lam-alif)?
This is a special combination called a ligature. When the letter 'ل' (lam) is followed by 'ا' (alif), they combine into the single character 'لا'. Our keyboard includes this common ligature for your convenience.
How do I type numbers?
You can use your physical keyboard's number keys. The keyboard shown is for Arabic letters, but standard 'Arabic' numerals (0, 1, 2, 3...) are used universally.
What's the difference between 'أ', 'إ', 'ا', and 'آ'?
These are all forms of 'alif'. 'ا' is the basic form. 'أ' and 'إ' are alif with a 'hamza' on top or bottom, representing a glottal stop. 'آ' (alif madda) represents a glottal stop followed by a long 'a' sound.
How do I type 'shadda' ( ّ ), the doubling sign?
You can find the shadda and other diacritics by holding the 'Shift' key. Shadda is used to indicate that a consonant is doubled.
Is this keyboard layout the same for all Arabic dialects?
The standard Arabic alphabet is used for all dialects, from Morocco to Iraq. While pronunciation varies, the writing system and keyboard layout are consistent.
Can I use phonetic typing for Arabic?
Yes, you can enable 'Phonetic Typing' mode. This allows you to type using English letters that sound similar to the Arabic letters (e.g., typing 'salam' will produce 'سلام').
What is 'tanwin'?
Tanwin refers to the three diacritics ' ً' (an), ' ٍ' (in), and ' ٌ' (un), which are usually found at the end of nouns to indicate indefiniteness. You can find them on the shift layer of the keyboard.
How do I type the 'taa marbuta' (ة)?
The 'taa marbuta' (ة) is a special form of the letter 'taa' used at the end of feminine words. It has its own key on our virtual keyboard.
Is this tool suitable for learning Arabic?
It's a great tool for practicing typing and familiarizing yourself with the Arabic script, but it should be used with other learning resources like textbooks or language apps for a complete education.
Does this keyboard support other languages that use the Arabic script, like Persian or Urdu?
This keyboard is for standard Arabic. We have separate keyboards for Persian (Farsi) and Urdu, which include the extra letters specific to those languages.
Why do some letters have dots and others don't?
The dots, or 'i'jam', are a crucial part of the Arabic script. They distinguish between letters that have the same basic shape, such as 'ب' (b), 'ت' (t), and 'ث' (th).
How can I type a question mark in Arabic?
The Arabic question mark is '؟'. You can find it on the shift layer of our virtual keyboard, or you can use your physical keyboard's question mark key.
